Welcome to LiftHeavyOver50.com. My name is Len Richardson, founder of this site and the Facebook page, Strength Training Exercises.

This site was inspired by the dramatic impact that strength training and a healthy diet had on me, a person over 50.

At age 54 I found myself at over 300 lbs. and barely able to do a singe body weight squat. I was turned down for a life insurance policy because my blood pressure was through the roof and my weight was out of control. I made a decision to try to turn things around. I cleaned up my diet and started a strength training program. The results have been nothing short of amazing. I decided to start this site to let others over 50 know that it’s never too late to lose fat and get in the best shape of your life.

My biggest obstacle was what type of exercise to do. I hated to exercise. I have never liked running or any type of cardiovascular exercise. My standing joke was that exercise could kill you. I found walking boring and hiking frankly just required more energy than I seemed to have. Then I saw an Olympic barbell, 300 lbs of steel weights and a bench/squat rack on Craigslist for $75. It was a really nice set-up for that price so I decided to buy it. I knew I could always sell it and easily get my money back if this was just another exercise that I hated.

I did some research online to find out what types of exercises I should be doing with my new weights. That’s where I learned about strength training. Not bodybuilding or competitive power-lifting but training for overall core strength. I found out that building strength has great benefits for older adults. There is a ton of information online about the benefits of strength training for people over 50. I challenge you to investigate this for yourself.

I had never lifted any weights before so I found a simple weight program to follow and started out just lifting an empty bar. I cleaned up my diet and my journey began. That was in October of 2012. In the first 12 months I lost over 60 lbs, my blood pressure was excellent and was feeling like I did when I was in my 20’s. I love feeling strong and energetic again.

I started this site to help others realize this as well. You can change your body composition over 50. You can feel energetic and healthy again. This is how I will choose to live my senior years. I’m sure you want this too. I’m here to let you know you can have it. My commitment to you is that I’ll do everything I can to help and support you in achieving your goal to get strong and healthy. I’m looking forward to getting to know you better.
